St. Ambrose unable to match Viterbo from beyond the arc
After a winter storm pushed the game back a day, St. Ambrose ran into a team that was hot from 3-point range Thursday night.
Viterbo shot 14-of-20 from beyond the arc, good for a 70-percent clip, to get past SAU 85-74 in La Crosse, Wis.
The Bees trailed by as many as 15 points with less than nine minutes to play and were down 72-58 with under seven left before making a late push.
Eight straight points, three from Atem Agot and five from Ignacio Dacunda, closed the gap to 72-66. St. Ambrose (14-10, 7-10 CCAC) had a chance to pull closer but Solomon Garrison misfired on a three that would have cut the deficit in half.
Viterbo took advantage, scoring on its next five possessions to ultimately build an 81-68 advantage with 1:25 remaining. SAU got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
While the V-Hawks shot 70 percent from 3-point range, the Bees were just 8-of-28 from deep, a 28.6-percent mark.
Viterbo was equally efficient in both halves, hitting 7-of-9 3-point attempts in building a 37-34 halftime lead before making 7-of-11 in the second half. It all came part of a 27-for-50 (54 percent) overall effort from the field.
Agot led three Bees in double figures with 21 points. Dacunda finished with 15 points and seven rebounds and Will Spriggs dropped in 14 points.
Grant Mason scored nine points and Guillermo Narbona totaled four points, 12 rebounds and a team-best five assists.
Garrison netted four points. Kieran Farrell and Austin Born each threw in three points and Collin Wainscott added one.
With just three games remaining in the regular season, the loss complicated the Bees' postseason hopes.
St. Ambrose dropped to 7-10 in league play, matching Governors State for seventh place. Viterbo and Holy Cross, both at 6-11, are just a game back. The top eight teams qualify for the CCAC Tournament.
It doesn't get any easier for SAU as the Bees will visit second-place Indiana Northwest (19-6, 13-4 CCAC) Saturday.
