Flames win twice - including huge upset over Viterbo - at Labor Day Classic

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – What a day!

The College of Saint Mary volleyball team pulled off a huge upset Friday afternoon in the CSM/United Sports Academy Labor Day Classic. Then the Flames cruised to an easy win over Mount Mercy University.

The Flames – ranked No. 18 in the country in the first NAIA preseason poll and then ranked No. 12 in the country in this week's poll – won a thrilling four-set match vs. Viterbo University to start the day. CSM won 3-1 by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-22. The V-hawks were ranked No. 4 in the country in this week's poll.

"We pulled off a huge upset over No. 4-ranked Viterbo," CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "What a great win for our program."

Kamryn Willman led the Flames with 15 kills, while Azaria Green belted 14, Lexie Langley tallied 13 and Morgan Ramsey finished with seven. Setters Lauren Anderson and Miranda Ring tossed up 30 and 23 assists, respectively. Rachel Cushing finished with 30 digs, Krissy Radicia added 19 and Langley chipped in with eight. Green tallied three block assists in the match.

"Our middle hitters were our offensive leaders today with Kamryn having 15 kills and hitting .538 and Azaria with 14 kills and .370 hitting," Pruett said. "All of our hitters contributed and we played great defensively. Rachel with 30 digs was amazing."

In the evening contest, CSM posted a 3-0 win over Mount Mercy by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-17.

Willman led the Flames again offensively – this time with 11 kills. Grace Werner knocked down eight kills and Green finished with seven. Anderson pushed up 21 assists and Ring chipped in with eight. Four players reached double figures in digs with Radicia leading the way with 15, Cushing adding 12, Langley contributing 11 and Anderson having 10.

"This match was another strong hitting performance from our middle hitters," Pruett said. "Kamryn led the team with 11 kills, no errors and a .688 hitting percentage. Grace had a great match with eight kills and .412 hitting percentage.

"The team is playing really well. A lot of things are gelling well."

CSM is now 9-1 on the season and returns play Saturday in the Labor Day Classic. The Flames face St. Francis (Ind.) at 1 p.m. and Providence (Mt.) at 7 p.m.
