Viterbo softball drops both in home opener

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Viterbo Softball (0-10) dropped both games in today's doubleheader against Trinity International (5-7) in the home opener at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletics Complex. The V-Hawks started the day off strong, with a 4-3 lead midway through the first game before succumbing to the hot bats of the Trojans. Channing Manske (JR/Black River Falls, Wis.) and Janelle Ulaszek (JR/Bartlett, Ill.) both had multiple hits in the day to get the V-Hawks on the board.

Game 1 - Trinity International 5, Viterbo 4

  • After giving up one run in each of the first three innings, the V-Hawks rallied in the bottom of the third with two outs to tie the game at 3-3. Taylor Pacana (JR/Huntley, Ill.), Kendyl Schine (SR/Kenosha, Wis.), and Janelle Ulaszek each brought a runner around to home to propel the V-Hawks.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Caitlin Brown (SR/Lake in the Hills, Ill.) tripled to left field, and scored on the following play to give Viterbo a 4-3 lead.
  • Trinity International loaded the bases to start the sixth and scored one run before the V-Hawks were able to get out of the inning.
  • Heather Anderson (Trinity International) hit a home run over the right centerfield wall to give the Trojans the 5-4 win.

VU Leaders: Channing Manske and Janelle Ulaszek each had three hits.

Game 2 - Trinity International 11, Viterbo 0

  • Trinity International took an early lead in the top of the first by loading the bases then hitting back-to-back doubles.
  • Kendyl Schine singled to center field in the bottom of the first to give the V-Hawks their lone hit the game.
  • Janelle Ulaszek relieved starter Jacky Mathews (JR/Plainfield, Ill.) in the second inning. Trinity International scored five runs in the second to take a 9-0 lead.
  • After pitching the entire first game, Amanda Bogdonovich (FR/Loyal, Wis.) took over in the circle for the V-Hawks to close out the last three innings.
  • Trinity International sealed the game with two more runs in the final frame.

VU Leaders: Kendyl Schine had one hit.

Viterbo will travel to Cardinal Stritch on Wednesday, with a 3:00 PM first pitch at The Rock Sports Complex (Franklin, Wis.). The V-Hawks will return home next weekend for the start of NSAA play on Saturday against Presentation.
