V-Hawks Battle Back Against Tigers

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Viterbo University Baseball team swept Olivet Nazarene on day one of their away series. The V-Hawks rise to 21-19 (CCAC 16-10) while the Pride rise to 20-20 (CCAC 16-14).

The V-Hawks would consistently grab a run an inning until a big fourth with a three run inning. In the fifth and sixth the V-Hawks would climb with a few runs to add, the Tigers attempt to comeback would stop at a single run.

Brandon Jaenke would pitch the fill seven on the mound with 10 strikeouts, a single run over seven hits for the win.

At the plate Brett Stuessel would lead with a double, triple, and two RBIs to accompany. Kyle Sontag with a two run homer. On base Xavier Gilmore, Matt Monaghan, and Nathan Faust would come in clutch with stolen bases, while in the field Stuessel, Spencer Hans, and Dane Mediger would turn a pair of double plays.

Viterbo 21, Olivet 16

The V-Hawks grabbing an early lead in the first and second innings, the Tigers responding in the second tying up the game with a pair of singles and a triple. Regaining a lead the V-Hawks would go up three runs before huge innings for the Tigers with five innings of scoring while holding Viterbo to none. Bringing back their lead the V-Hawks would score eight runs in the top of the ninth. Taking the game into extra innings ONU would let up four additional runs for a V-Hawk win.

On the mound, Jake Oweneel would pitch the first four innings with two strikeouts, seven hits, and six runs. Joe Nelan, Kyle Burns, and Dominic LeBlanc would come in relief over the next two innings with two strikeouts. Facing nine batters Jomar Guzman would let up three hits and two runs over two innings, Nolan Hines closing out the final two innings with a strikeout, six hits, and five runs for the save.

Stuessel led the V-Hawks with a homer, double, and five RBIs. Following with a double and four RBIs Derick Cossio would continue the scoring, Monaghan would also collect a double and three RBIs, while Gavin Daniel would collect an RBI with a sacrifice bunt.

The V-Hawks return to action Friday April 18 for day two of the series with Olivet Nazarene.
